How to Fish: All Fish Locations, Rods and Bait by Island
Updated 2026-08-25
Find every currently documented fish and boss by island, with the rod, lure, quest item, and chained bait required to catch each target.
How locations, rods and lure tiers work
How to Fish ties its collection route to campaign progress. The Steam store confirms the broad loop: catch and sell creatures, improve gear, complete quests, defeat bosses, and reach more dangerous islands. Community-maintained location tables add the target-level detail below. Treat the list as a launch-build field guide rather than immutable game code: check the active objective and current patch whenever a lure no longer produces the expected result. A boss may require a dedicated Boss Lure, a quest reward, or even another boss instead of the lure used by ordinary species.
Lighthouse fish and boss
Use the Crab Fishing Rod in the opening Lighthouse area. Free Lure targets Rock Crab and Shrimp. Hot Dog can also catch Rock Crab and is used for Lobster. The Spider Crab boss uses the Empty Beer Can rather than a normal lure. Because Rock Crab appears in both documented bait pools, it is not proof that the bait failed; switch to Hot Dog when the objective specifically needs Lobster. Preserve the unusual boss drop and confirm the boat or quest transition before returning to the normal sell-and-cook loop.
Island 2 fish, bosses and bait
Island 2 mixes the Crab Fishing Rod with the regular Fishing Rod. Piranha uses the Crab Fishing Rod with Hot Dog. With the Fishing Rod, Free Lure targets Mackerel and Gar; Pike and Goldfish accept Free Lure or Beginner Lure; Beginner Lure targets Cod, Perch, and Triggerfish as well. The Giant Piranha boss requires Modified Leech, while The Old Pike requires a Beginner Boss Lure. Prepare boss triggers separately from routine bait and do not assume a more expensive ordinary lure will substitute for a quest-specific item.
Island 3 fish, Pufferfish and Blue Shark
The documented Island 3 standard pool uses the Fishing Rod with Standard Lure: Angelfish, Boxfish, Catfish, Sea Urchin, Seahorse, Clownfish, Bluegill, Salmon, and Needlefish. Blue Shark requires a Standard Boss Lure. Pufferfish uses a Carrot obtained through the local Tourist or Vacation quest chain rather than a shop lure. Complete the quest and prepare healing supplies before consuming that one-purpose trigger. If a requested endangered species is needed for the Carrot step, verify its name against the current objective before handing it over.
Island 4 fish and the Tuna-to-Albatross chain
Use the Fishing Rod with Professional Lure for the documented Island 4 standard pool: Parrotfish, Voxelfish, Bass, Halibut, Eel, Tigerfish, Flying Fish, Sengarat, and Red Snapper. Tuna is the first boss-stage catch and requires a Professional Boss Lure. Keep that Tuna: community tables identify it as the bait or quest trigger for the Albatross. This two-step chain is why selling every high-value catch immediately can stop progression. Finish the Tuna step, trigger the bird according to the local objective, then preserve the Bird Head trophy after the aerial fight.
Island 5 fish and the final chained bosses
The documented Island 5 standard pool uses Scientific Lure with the Fishing Rod: Anglerfish, Blobfish, Oarfish, Superdwarf Fish, and Stonefish. Goblin Shark requires a Scientific Boss Lure. Bowhead Whale requires a Fish Bucket, and the Mutated Bowhead Whale then requires the Bowhead Whale itself. Keep the intermediate whale until the objective confirms that it has been consumed by the final trigger. End-game lists are especially patch-sensitive, so record the build and report any new species or changed requirement through the contact page.
Complete boss-bait checklist
The currently cross-checked boss sequence is: Spider Crab — Lighthouse — Empty Beer Can; Giant Piranha — Island 2 — Modified Leech; The Old Pike — Island 2 — Beginner Boss Lure; Blue Shark — Island 3 — Standard Boss Lure; Pufferfish — Island 3 — Carrot; Tuna — Island 4 — Professional Boss Lure; Albatross — Island 4 — Tuna; Goblin Shark — Island 5 — Scientific Boss Lure; Bowhead Whale — Island 5 — Fish Bucket; Mutated Bowhead Whale — Island 5 — Bowhead Whale. Quest wording overrides this table if a later update changes the route.
Efficient collection and verification route
Carry the current island's ordinary lure plus the known boss trigger, keep at least one open inventory slot, and mark each confirmed species in the tracker before changing islands. Do not sell a named quest catch until every linked objective advances. For rare variants, revisit the correct island with the same documented base-species setup rather than assuming a different lure guarantees rarity. If a target refuses to appear, verify the rod, lure tier, island, quest state, and game version one at a time; changing all five at once makes a successful correction impossible to identify.
How to apply this guide safely
Begin with “How locations, rods and lure tiers work” and compare it with the objective, inventory, and controls shown by your installed build. Do not change several variables at once. If the guide concerns progression, complete one dialogue or hand-in and confirm the objective changed before sailing away. If it concerns combat, test the control or equipment choice on an ordinary encounter before spending a boss trigger. If it concerns troubleshooting, preserve the save and start with reversible checks such as restarting the session and verifying files.
Keep a short run record with the game version, solo or co-op state, host identity, starting objective, relevant equipment, steps taken, and outcome. Physics, network state, and retail patches can make two attempts look different even when both players describe them honestly. A controlled record lets you identify which condition changed. It also gives the developer a useful reproduction if the result points to a defect rather than a missed quest step.
Evidence and version check
This article uses Steam Store — How to Fish, GAMES.GG — All Fish Locations and How to Get Them, G2A News — Fish, Bosses, Rods and Bait by Island. Official store text and developer announcements establish supported features and broad progression. Steam achievement wording establishes that a named action exists, but it does not prove an exact coordinate, probability, price, damage value, or hidden timer. Community discussions can reveal a repeated problem and possible workaround, but one reply is not treated as a universal mechanic. Where evidence stops, the guide uses cautious testing steps instead of inventing a precise answer.
Before relying on an older route, check the Steam news and discussion dates against the updated date at the top of this page. Prefer the current in-game objective when it conflicts with a video or forum post. Avoid unknown executables, replacement saves, cheats, or destructive file edits offered as shortcuts. A legitimate workaround should be explainable, reversible, and testable without surrendering account credentials or deleting the only known-good save.
Completion check
Finish with “Efficient collection and verification route,” then verify the result in the system that matters: quest log for progression, inventory for items, Steam for achievements, or a repeatable symptom check for a technical fix. Do not treat a visual animation alone as proof that the save registered the event. Wait for a normal transition and inspect the state before selling items, changing hosts, or starting another objective. If the result differs from this page, send the URL, build number, exact steps, and observed result through the contact page; that evidence is how we correct guides without turning uncertain reports into false facts.
