Story achievements unlock automatically — don't farm them
Seven of the 28 achievements are pure story progress: Getting started, Who stole my beer, Dinnertime, Vacation, Terrorizing bird, Deadliest catch, and We are so back. They fire as you clear each island's quest chain and boss, so no separate setup is ever needed. If one of them fails to pop after a boss kill, the cause is almost always an incomplete hand-in — a trophy still lying in the arena or the wrong item delivered to the NPC — rather than a broken achievement. Our full walkthrough maps exactly which hand-in gates each story step.
The global unlock rates above tell you how far the average player gets. The story achievements sit at the top of the table because every buyer encounters them; the steep drop-off after the mid-game bosses shows where most players stall. Use that curve pragmatically: any achievement rated below roughly 5% is one you should plan a dedicated session around instead of expecting it to happen by accident.
The best order: three passes, not one
Chasing all 28 achievements in a single playthrough is the slowest route. Third-party trophy guides and community testing both converge on a three-pass structure. Pass one is the story: follow the island progression normally and let the progression achievements — Getting started, Who stole my beer, Dinnertime, Vacation, Terrorizing bird, Deadliest catch, and We are so back — unlock as you clear quest blockers and bosses. Never delay a boss fight because you still need a roulette win or a missing drip creature.
Pass two cleans up systems you have already unlocked: the Killscore trick-shot achievements, the cooking set, gear upgrades, casino runs, and the one-off specials. None of these need a fresh story run. Pass three saves the expensive and route-disrupting achievements for last — Easy, Rich! Millionaire, I'm the bird now, Collector, Fishipedia, Bean, and Handyman — because each demands that you already understand combat, the economy, or the map.
The three rarest achievements
Steam's global unlock rates put Bean, Fishipedia, and Handyman at the bottom of the table in the checked snapshot. Bean requires finishing the game in under an hour, which means a dedicated speedrun route: minimal starting gear, a fast money loop built on cooking volcano catches, weapon upgrades in a strict order, and no optional content. Our Bean guide walks the documented route stage by stage.
Fishipedia requires every creature variant, including the rare glowing drip forms, and is mostly a patience check across all five islands — keep the Tracker open while you work. Handyman requires beating the final boss without purchased weapons, so attempt it only after you know the fight's tells from a normal clear. See the Fishipedia and Handyman guides for the evidence-backed setups.
Casino and money achievements without the pain
GOLD GOLD GOLD is pure RNG — keep feeding the slot machine with disposable funds until a gold skin appears, and stop the moment it registers. All in requires winning a roulette bet on green; bet one cheap, replaceable creature per attempt and never risk a boss trophy or progression item on a spin. Rich! Millionaire is the most misunderstood achievement in the game: you do not need $100,000 in your wallet. You need a single item whose displayed sale value reaches $100,000, which late-game creatures, killscore bonuses, and cooking multipliers can stack toward. Check the value shown before selling and only confirm when it reads six figures. Our Rich! Millionaire guide documents the value-stacking method.
Combat and physics one-offs
Easy asks you to kill a boss within ten seconds of the fight starting, and third-party reporting puts its unlock rate near 3% — a useful signal of how much preparation it actually takes. Learn the boss on a normal clear first, then return with a fully upgraded weapon, a full magazine, healing handled before the trigger, and damage starting the instant the fight begins. Pick an early boss you can reproduce consistently rather than gambling on the final one, and treat Dynamite as a helper, not a guarantee.
I'm the bird now requires getting the boat airborne, which never happens in normal sailing. Community-tested methods include wedging the hull against uneven shoreline and keeping the throttle on until the physics launch it, or having a co-op partner punch the bow while another player drives. The boat only needs to be clearly airborne for the achievement to register. The Killscore trick-shot set, including the 360 no-scope style achievements, rewards spinning before kills for score multipliers — practice the timing on ordinary creatures before attempting it on anything dangerous.
Track as you go
Start with story achievements on your first playthrough, then use a second run for challenge achievements like Bean and Handyman. Use our Tracker to mark achievements as you earn them, and the achievements roadmap for the full category-by-category plan.
