Story bosses and required progression bait

Story bosses gate campaign progress. The Type column separates them from optional fights, and each linked creature card contains its encounter notes and related guide.

Story boss bait chains, step by step

Spider Crab — Empty Beer Can (Lighthouse)

  1. Earn money from your first catches and buy a Beer Can.
  2. Give it to the Lighthouse Keeper — he drinks it and returns the Empty Beer Can.
  3. Equip the Empty Beer Can as bait and cast to summon the Spider Crab.
  4. Defeat it and feed the boss meat to the keeper for the boat keys.

Giant Piranha — Leech Bait (Forest)

  1. Speak with the woman by the lake.
  2. Find three Leeches lying on the ground around the Forest and return them.
  3. Take the Leech Bait — the Giant Piranha ignores the Beginner Boss Lure.
  4. Kill the smaller piranhas first, defeat the boss, and return its drop for the Island 3 coordinates.

Pufferfish — the Tourist's Carrot (Desert)

  1. Catch a Needlefish with the Standard Lure.
  2. Give it to the Tourist under the tree and take his Carrot.
  3. Use the Carrot as bait to summon the Pufferfish.
  4. Keep your distance — it is the most common mid-game progression wall — and hand in the trophy for the Island 4 coordinates.

Albatross — a placed Tuna (Rocks)

  1. Summon and defeat the Tuna with the Professional Boss Lure ($1,200).
  2. Do not sell it — drop the Tuna's body on the grass.
  3. Wait for the Albatross to fly down; it cannot be hooked with a rod.
  4. Bring a long-range weapon (one field guide records the Island 4 sniper rifle at $3,800 plus scope) and hand its head to the NPC for the final island coordinates.

Bowhead Whale → Mutated Bowhead Whale (Volcano, finale)

  1. Complete the scientist's requests (five Volcano-native fish on the Scientific Lure) to receive the Fish Bucket.
  2. Equip the Fish Bucket, catch and defeat the Bowhead Whale — keep the body.
  3. Carry it to the volcano crater and throw it in to start the final encounter.
  4. Defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale, take its fin to the hazmat-suit NPC for the military boat key, and sail home to roll the credits.

Frequently asked questions

How many bosses are in How to Fish?

11 in total: 6 story bosses (Spider Crab, Giant Piranha, Pufferfish, Albatross, Bowhead Whale, and the final Mutated Bowhead Whale) plus 5 optional mini-bosses (Sunfish, The Old Pike, Blue Shark, Tuna, Goblin Shark). Story bosses gate the next island; mini-bosses feed quests, achievements, and money routes.

What bait does each boss need in How to Fish?

Story bosses use special quest bait, not shop lures: Empty Beer Can (Spider Crab), Leech Bait (Giant Piranha), Carrot (Pufferfish), a placed Tuna body (Albatross), Fish Bucket (Bowhead Whale), and the Bowhead Whale itself thrown into the volcano (Mutated Bowhead Whale). Mini-bosses answer the four purchasable boss lures.

How much do boss lures cost in How to Fish?

Per community price tables: Beginner Boss Lure $40 (Forest), Standard Boss Lure $280 (Desert), Professional Boss Lure $1,200 (Rocks), Scientific Boss Lure $5,800 (Volcano). Each summons that island's mini-boss and is consumed on use.

Which boss should I not sell in How to Fish?

Three bodies matter more than their sale price: the Blue Shark (carry it to the Grillmaster to unlock the grill), the Tuna (its body summons the Albatross), and the Bowhead Whale (throwing it into the volcano starts the final boss). Selling any of them forces a re-farm.
