Desert (Island 3)
The third island. Nine regular catches on the Standard Lure, the Blue Shark that unlocks the Grillmaster's grill, and the Pufferfish story boss behind the Tourist's Carrot.

How to unlock
Return the Giant Piranha's drop to the forest woman for the coordinates.
⚠️ Avoid these mistakes on Desert (Island 3)
- Do NOT sell the Blue Shark — carry it to the Grillmaster to unlock the grill, your main money multiplier. Selling it means another $280 lure and a redo.
- The Standard Boss Lure and the ordinary pink Standard Lure are different items; buying the wrong one is a classic $280 mistake.
- The Pufferfish is the most common mid-game progression wall — prepare healing food and open dodging space before casting the Carrot.
Farm the Desert pool with the Standard Lure
- Every normal Desert catch uses the Standard Lure: Catfish, Bluegill, Yellow Boxfish, Angelfish, Needlefish, Sea Urchin, Clownfish, Seahorse, and Bowlfish.
- Community price lists put the Standard Lure at $15 — the Desert is the easiest island to farm for cash.
Blue Shark mini-boss: unlock the grill
- Buy the Standard Boss Lure on the Desert island ($280 per community price tables).
- Cast to summon the Blue Shark and defeat it — a maxed Uzi is enough per community guides.
- Carry the body to the Grillmaster instead of selling it: he starts the grill, your main money multiplier for the rest of the game. Selling forfeits the quest reward.
Pufferfish boss: the Tourist's Carrot quest
- Equip a Standard Lure and catch a Needlefish.
- Find the Tourist under the tree and give him the Needlefish.
- Take the Carrot he gives you — no lure can replace it.
- Use the Carrot as bait to summon the Pufferfish.
- Keep your distance — it is fast and tanky, the most common mid-game progression wall.
- Defeat it and hand in the trophy for the Island 4 (Rocks) coordinates.

Collection & drip variants on this island
Every normal creature on Desert (Island 3) (Catfish, Bluegill, Yellow Boxfish, Angelfish, Needlefish, Sea Urchin, Clownfish, Seahorse, Bowlfish, Blue Shark, Pufferfish) has a rare drip variant with a rainbow-colored name. Drip variants appear in the same pool, on the same bait — there is no special drip lure. Kill the drip creature so the entry registers, then press Tab in-game to check the encyclopedia. Track what you still need with our collection tracker — normal catches count toward Collector, drip variants toward Fishipedia.

Island not unlocking?
Progression gates in How to Fish are quest hand-ins, not discoveries: Desert (Island 3) unlocks when the previous island's boss trophy is delivered to its quest NPC. If the next destination has not appeared, return to the previous island, confirm the boss was defeated and the trophy actually handed in, then restart the game once. Still stuck? Frequently asked questions
Should I sell the Blue Shark in How to Fish?
No. Carry the Blue Shark to the Grillmaster instead — he starts the grill, which becomes your main money multiplier for the rest of the game (cooking raises an item's sale value). Selling the shark forfeits the quest reward and forces a re-farm with a fresh $280 Standard Boss Lure.
How do I get the Carrot for the Pufferfish?
Catch a Needlefish with the Standard Lure, then give it to the Tourist under the tree on the Desert island. He hands you the Carrot, which is the only bait the Pufferfish answers.
Why is the Pufferfish so hard to kill?
It is fast and tanky by design — community guides call it the most common mid-game progression wall. Keep your distance, use your best unlocked weapon, and clear space to dodge before casting the Carrot.
